Americans react to Fungie's disappearance as Dingle dolphin makes US headlines

With hopes of his return fading by the day, it seems all of Ireland has turned its attention to celebrating the incredible legacy of Fungie the Dingle dolphin.

We’re not the only ones.

Across the world, international observers are sharing in the grief of a Co Kerry town left to grapple with life after Fungie – and they’re offering touching stories about their experiences with the giant sea mammal.

Media outlets around the globe have seized on the story of a dolphin who shaped the story of Dingle before disappearing without a trace two weeks ago.

And people across the US – who make up a huge proportion of the tourists we welcome every summer – have taken to the internet to share their stories of meeting Fungie on trips to Dingle over the years.

One observer wrote: “I was one of the lucky ones to have met Fungie on a trip in the 90s. It was magical and unforgettable as is the beautiful Dingle. Fond memories. RIP Fungie.”

Another described a visit to Dingle – a “wonderful little town on a beautiful coast” – three years ago.

Despite not actually seeing Fungie up close, the clearly touched reader said: “I thought it might just be an Irish myth but I’m glad there really was a dolphin named Fungie, although if he is really gone, he will become that myth.

“When this horrible disease is gone, I hope to get back to Ireland and especially Kerry, a beautiful place with some wonderful people.”

And a third, perhaps mindful of local fears that Dingle’s tourist industry could be negatively impacted by Fungie’s departure, urged others to “plan on a trip to Dingle when Covid-19 is resolved.

“The people and the pubs are wonderful! The peninsula is gorgeous and traditional music ties it all together.

“I was so sad Dingle lost Fungie, but you don’t want to miss this magical place even though sweet Fungie is gone.”

A more mischievous observation came from one US onlooker, who remarked: “He'll be back after the election. Biden's Irish. Wish him luck.”
