American voter points out Wexford when asked to guess where Iran is on map

A registered American voter pointed out Wexford when asked to guess where Iran is on a map.

A survey, conducted by US research firm Morning Consult with news opinion site Politico, asked respondents to identify the Middle Eastern country's geographic location following heightened tensions between America and Iran.

Last week it emerged US President Donald Trump ordered the assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani through a drone strike, an act that has sent shockwaves throughout the world.

The escalating crisis last night saw missiles fired at two US airbases in Iraq.

Respondents to the survey were first given a larger, unlabelled global map - which shows two people think Iran is just off either the south or northwest coast of Ireland.

Each orange dot represents a guess, while the green dots are correct estimates.

The research found that just 23% of participants could find Iran on a map of the world.

This jumped to 28% when the map was narrowed down to Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

But one spot in the top left shows that a registered American voter thinks Iran is on the southeastern tip of Wexford - possibly bang on Rosslare.

Men were found to be twice as likely as women to be able to locate Iran on both maps.

Morning Consult notes there were no statistical differences in support for the strike on Soleimani between those who could find Iran on the map and those who couldn't.

The study also asked a number of questions about current affairs and was broken down by a number of demographics, including income, age and education.

The full research is available here, while Morning Consult's article on the responses is here.
