American tourist in Edinburgh left 'befuddled' by Scottish delicacy

An American man who recently moved to Edinburgh has said he is ‘befuddled’ after sampling some local cuisine.

In a video posted to TikTok, he explains what a well-fired roll is (as if we need to be told) before sampling one. Shockingly, he doesn’t enjoy the baked goods - though many have commented to suggest alternative ways of eating it.

He asks viewers: “Do you like carbs, but wish they were more carcinogenic?

“Well Scotland has the product for you - Browning's well-fired rolls. That is burned bread, on purpose.”

After discovering the baked goods have been in production since 1945, the Californian man gives them a try - and he’s not a fan. Showing the camera the top of the roll, he gives it a sniff and confirms it smells burned.

Tearing it open, he says: “A dinner roll that is burned on top. Why is this a thing? This country befuddles me.

“Is it for people who gave up smoking but still need a fix? Is it supposed to remind you of your childhood when dad made breakfast?

“I do not understand this at all. Who chooses this?

“Please explain. My brain is hurting. It’s been structurally compromised by arson.”

The LA born TikTok user wasn’t the only one taking a stand against well-fired rolls, with Scottish folks chiming in with their criticisms of the delicacy. Colin Mackay commented: “I have no idea why these are a thing, I’ve never bought them and I don’t know anyone who does.”

Another user added: “These are an old person thing. I suspect they date from a time when everyone smoked and lived in polluted cities.”

A third said: “I’m from Edinburgh originally, and I just don’t get ‘well-fired’ either.”

However, some made suggestions on how to enjoy the rolls - claiming that they can actually be quite enjoyable. One said: “I love well-fired rolls.

“Get ones from a bakery, rather than in plastic. Bit of butter and a fried egg, lovely.”

Another agreed: “What are you doing man? You have to put butter, with a fried egg and bacon on it.”

A third said: “The way you just ripped it open and ate it like that, got to be the most American thing I’ve ever seen, get some square sausage, onion and brown sauce - f*** sake.”
