American soccer team reveals it has a new fan base in East Belfast

An American soccer team has revealed how it has a new fan base - in East Belfast.

Energy FC have forged a special bond with Glentoran following last week's comical story involving Oklahoma girl Morgan Day.

Morgan was unwittingly dragged into the Glens' celebrations of 'Morgan Day' on April 23.

It was 15 years to the day since Chris Morgan scored a dramatic late winner in a virtual title decider against Linfield.

American girl Morgan was inadvertently tagged in some tweets from Glentoran fans celebrating the Big Two win.

She quickly became a viral hit with the supporters who labelled her the 'Queen of East Belfast'.

Lifelong Glentoran supporter Alan White, now living in Oklahoma, then arranged to deliver some club merchandise to Morgan, including a jersey and scarf.

Oklahoma City's professional soccer club Energy FC joined in the fun, with their Communications and Public Relations Manager Tyler Vaughn revealing how their social media stats went "off the charts" last week.

Tyler was speaking on the latest episode of Energy FC's 'Off Pitch' podcast, which included special interviews with Morgan and Alan.

Tyler told the show: "Our social media mentions were off the charts last week.

"We have acquired a whole new fan base in East Belfast, Northern Ireland. Which is tremendous. We love it.

"We like George Best a lot, and we are familiar with the city. But not to this degree. I couldn't have told you anything about Glentoran prior to this week.

"But this friendship has warmed and it is incredible."

Morgan said the past week had been "wild".

She added: "It has been so much fun. I have met Alan in person and he gave me my shirt and scarf, and he was the first to bow to the 'Queen of East Belfast'.

"We are obviously having a good time with it, and things are starting to die down a bit. But I will always look back at my three days as Queen."

Alan revealed how he got lured into last week's online 'Morgan Day'.

"It organically took off on its own," he told the podcast.

"Some friends back home started shooting me messages asking if I knew this girl Morgan Day from Oklahoma.

"Now, Oklahoma City is a big place. They said there is some woman from Oklahoma City which has been tagged in these tweets and it is just taking off.

"I looked online and saw them and thought this was brilliant. So I thought I would try and get the top, scarf and book to Morgan and it sort of spun out of control from there.

"Glentoran then messaged me asking if I could get the items to her before Saturday when they were streaming the Morgan Day game, so Morgan and me arranged to meet up."
