American musician Nile Rodgers pays touching tribute to young Dublin man who lost life to rare cancer

Musician Nile Rodgers paid a touching tribute to a young Irish man who tragically died from a rare form of cancer.

24-year-old Alex Lynam was diagnosed with NUT Carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

It is so rare that only two other people in Europe had it last year.

The Dubliner passed away last October after a short battle with the illness.

American record producer Nile Rodgers paid a touching tribute on Twitter.

He said: “As a 2x #cancer survivor and human being, Alex's story touched my heart. During our short friendship we had a soul connection.

“I'm donating a very valuable item because when people give it's nice to give  back. Let's keep his memory alive. Too much cancer, we need more love.”

Doctors first discovered the tumour when the DIT student fell ill and lost sight in one eye.

The tumour had been hitting the eye nerve leading to the loss in sight, according to the doctors.

Alex was due to go to Canada for the summer with his friends but couldn’t when he fell ill.

Alex met Nile when he was in the hospital receiving aggressive treatment who took him and his family as VIP guests to Electric Picnic.

He also managed to attend sister Hayley’s wedding but tragically passed away on October 5.

Mum Joan told the Irish Sun: “It was 29 days after Hayley’s wedding and he was gone. He had danced the night away and was the last man standing at the wedding.”

The family are raising funds for the family room in St Clare’s Oncology ward in Beaumont Hospital in Alex’s memory.

Joan added: “The staff there are very kind and they will get you a cup of tea, but you need somewhere to go and make a call, regroup, have a cup of tea, open a window, cry, breathe.

“It is a multi-purpose room- a family room, a nurses’ room, a sitting room, a tea room, a room to cry.”
