American Idol viewers thrilled as eliminated fan-favourite makes surprising return

American Idol 's axed contestant Zachariah Smith made a surprise comeback to the show.

The 19-year-old returned after being eliminated over the weekend with fellow singer We Ani. Fans were left fuming at producers for sending home "the best singers of the competition."

We and Zachariah had missed out on a spot in the final to Colin Stough, Iam Tongi and Megan Danielle.

"These two were done WRONG!! We’ Ani was AMAZING as was Zach and Haven!! Those were your top 3! Disappointed again AI!! Public should only have part of vote. Judges should also go to the end! It’s all based on popularity NOT talent!" one fan angrily tweeted after the results.

A second added: "what the actual f***?! The voters can NOT be this idiotic. I'm going to assume We' Ani & Zach already have contracts lined up because there is no way they didn't make it into the final 3. Otherwise this makes absolutely no sense to me."

"Not happy with the results. Zach and We Ani better than Megan and Colin. Warren Peay is a better singer than Colin.

Iam has a story bur singing could be better," a third fumed.

However, despite being axed, Zachariah announced that he'd be returning for one last performance during the final. He took to Instagram to thank his newfound fans for their support.

"Good morning Everyone! I wanted to hop on here this morning and tell you all that I am going to be going through all of my inboxes and comments and trying my best to reach back out to each of you these next couple days.

"I am so thankful for you all, and thank you for giving me a couple of days to have a little bit of space. Lol. I’ll be back in the studio today rehearsing for this Sunday’s show!"

He concluded: "Seriously guys, it is gonna be such a fun finale! I can’t wait to see you all again on Sunday!"

Zachariah has also teased new music for the American Idol fans that can't get enough of him.

"We're not done.," he told his followers. "This is just a new beginning to my new chapter in this new life, I guess. I don't know. It's really weird. There's a lot of things."
