American Gods' Ricky Whittle 'committed to completing' story despite its cancellation

Actor Ricky Whittle has said he's "committed to completing" the American Gods story after the show was pulled by American network Starz after three seasons.

Whittle, 39, had played the lead role in the fantasy drama series which was an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's 2001 novel of the same name.

The series also starred Ian McShane who is best known for his role in comedy-drama Lovejoy.

Starz is a premium cable service stateside and representatives have revealed that the show will not be returning after its third season finished earlier this month.

It had been reported that viewing figures declining was the main reason behind the abrupt end. THR.com reported that the show had seen a 65 per cent drop in its audience.

However, soon after the news was announced, former Hollyoaks star Ricky appeared to give the show's fans a little bit of hope that things may not be completely finished just yet.

In a statement he posted to Instagram, he said: "This has been an amazing journey thus far and I am so grateful to my fellow cast and crew who have worked so hard on this award winning show.

"We have the best fans around the world and thank each of you for your passion and support, so know that Neil Gaiman, Fremantle and myself and the cast are still committed to completing Neil Gaiman's critically acclaimed story."

He added: "Believe."

The show premiered in 2017 and is set in a fantasy version of the US where the Old Gods are at war with the increasingly powerful New Gods.

The star of The 100 played demi-God Shadow Moon while Ian, starred as Mr Wednesday.

In its statement, Starz said: "American Gods will not return for a fourth season. Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman's ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country."

Starz is in talks with producers Fremantle over a potential American Gods film that would wrap up the story, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
