American gets help from Irish people about GAA in wholesome social media post

An American who was trying to help out his sons by playing Gaelic football with them was given some wholesome advice on a Reddit post when he got confused by the rules and techniques of the game.

Anyone who has never seen any GAA game before can get quite confused - we all remember the shock and awe that those in Great Britain had when Sky Sports first started showing the All-Ireland Championships.

And of course, we had Josh Pray getting a ticket to the 2019 All-Ireland Football final after months of brilliant videos about the sport.

The GAA community is a welcoming one, which is why a post on the r/Ireland reddit page caught our eye.

u/t0m_serv0 took to the platform to explain his problem.

He said: "Howdy y'all. My wife and kids moved from the US about 5 years ago and my boys have started playing in the local GAA club. I grew up in the US and feel a bit lost with the workings of the game.

"My boys struggle with some of the aspects of the game and I want to help them train. My wife grew up here so it's all natural to her. Is there any good resources out there for the people that didn't grow up with the game? Thanks!"

One suggested: "If you want to help them train. Google is your friend, simply search "gaa drills for ___ year olds", loads of clubs have online resources !"

A second added: "My advice would be to just ask the trainer/coach for some tips and tricks so they can practice a bit around the house. Otherwise Youtube Has some videos about it as well."

But the most popular comment came from u/VEE-Heel, who detailed a number of different options.

They said: "You can try and get involved in the training yourself. Most clubs will happily welcome new people in who want to help out. An extra adult body is always helpful and you don't need to be an expert to put cones down around the pitch or collect the balls.

"GAA website has good resources with videos and drills for basics skills and beyond. The more you watch the more you'll learn. Go to a match with someone who knows the game and ask them questions. If you're young enough you could try out playing yourself"
