American fast food dining chain which selected Renfrewshire as first Scottish branch reveals it has bitten the dust

An American diner which opened in a blaze of publicity two years ago has done a disappearing act.

Denny’s at Braehead had employed 120 and was the US franchise’s first Scottish restaurant.

But now the building near the M8 has been cleared and the owners have advertised for a new tenant.

It opened for the Christmas rush in 2018 but was hit with bad online reviews including soggy mozzarella, long waits and mashed potato with “ice lumps” inside.

Local MP Gavin Newlands presided at the opening, with high hopes it would become a Renfrewshire attraction.

And boss Sean Geddes said then: “We hope to bring that same sense of community to Braehead with this new restaurant, from breakfast any time to satisfying lunches and dinners.

“If hungry fans are in the mood for it, chances are we’re serving it.”

The brand - which features a giant fork outside - is self-proclaimed as ‘America’s favourite restaurant.

It first opened in Lakewood, California in 1953.

But Renfrewshire folk never really got a taste for the ‘Grand Slam’ breakfast of two buttermilk pancakes, two fried eggs, two strips of bacon and two link sausages served with hash browns or toast.

Nor other dishes including the T-Bone Steak and Eggs, Sante Fe Sizzlin’ Skillet and The Grand Slamwich.

A Denny’s spokesman said: “We are aware of the closure of the Glasgow location.

“While we cannot speak to the specific reason behind the decision to close the restaurant, we do offer assistance to all of our franchise owners when considering what to do with their business.

“Ultimately, the final decision to close, whether temporarily or otherwise, is in the hands of each franchise business owner and their particular circumstances.”
