Artist Brett Whiteley’s The American dream 1968 - 1969 is one of the Art Gallery of Western Australia’s most iconic and requested works. As such, it is included in a new two-part display entitled American dream, American nightmare.

The major 18-part installation is a visual summation of Whiteley’s experiences in America. It charts his initial passion for the place, his intense responses to the politics and culture of the US, and finally his desire to leave it all behind.

While the first display is complemented with images by British artist David Hockney, the American nightmare side of the exhibition will exhibit dark, political works by American artists such as Leon Golub.
