Monica Lewinsky is co-producing the forthcoming new season of Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story, which will address the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal.
FX announced the news that the new series, titled Impeachment: American Crime Story, will star Beanie Feldstein (Lady Bird) as Lewinsky, with Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp and Annaleigh Ashford (Masters of Sex) as Paula Jones. It has not yet been revealed who will portray Clinton.
Murphy, whose second series about the assassination of Gianni Versace won two Golden Globe awards, had previously teased his plans for a Lewinsky season. Last year he told The Hollywood Reporter that he would only do it with Lewinsky’s involvement.
“I told her, ‘Nobody should tell your story but you,’” he said last year. “If you want to produce it with me, I would love that.”
John Landgraf, FX’s chief executive, said the series would be based on the book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President by Jeffrey Toobin.
“There’s a lot of nuance in the story that people don’t know,” Landgraf said.
Murphy is working on at least two other Netflix projects in addition to ongoing FX series including American Horror Story and Pose, after signing an overall deal with the streaming service worth $300 million last year.
His forthcoming ACS series is the latest of many examinations of the 1998 scandal. It is being written by playwright Sarah Burgess, and is scheduled for release on 27 September 2020, with production beginning in February.
