American businessman wants to buy Newcastle United should Saudi takeover fail Premier League tests

There is a second bidder lining up a move for Newcastle United - should the takeover led by Amanda Staveley fail to get the green light from the Premier League, according to reports.

The Mirror claims that American businessman Henry Mauriss has been in talks with Mike Ashley over a potential buy-out since last year - and is awaiting to see the outcome of the Premier League tests being carried out on Staveley's consortium.

Mauriss, who runs media company ClearTV, made his fortune working in the 'credit' industry - selling his company, Credit America Corporation, in 2010.

Sources told The Mirror that Mauriss was a 'genuine bidder', and claimed he has ambitious plans for the Magpies.

“There is the promise of significant investment not only in the squad but also the club’s academy. It’s a fantastic business plan.

“The investor has seen the way Liverpool’s owners have harnessed themselves with the local community and made it a team effort with everyone pulling in the same direction.

"Newcastle have a huge and loyal support. It’s a club with massive potential."

It is further claimed that Mauriss' bid would stand at £50 million more than what has been agreed with the Public Investment Fund, Reuben Brothers and Staveley.

It is expected that Staveley and her group will find out in the coming days whether they can complete a deal.
