Amélie the Musical is coming to the UK next year

A musical adaptation of award-winning film Amélie is to come to the UK next year.

Amélie the Musical, a reimagining of the 2001 Parisian-set film starring Audrey Tautou, will embark on a national tour from April 2019.

The musical will make its UK premiere at The Watermill Theatre in Newbury on April 11, and will come to London the following month, including a three night run at the New Wimbledon Theatre from May 22-25.

The show, which debuted in California in 2015, features music by Daniel Messé, lyrics by Nathan Tysen and Daniel Messé and book by Craig Lucas.

Phillipa Soo, who originated the role of Eliza Hamilton , played the title role of Amélie when the show opened on Broadway last year.

The UK tour will be directed by Michael Fentiman, with casting details yet to be announced.

The five-time Academy Award nominated film tells the story of a young woman in Paris who takes it upon herself to instigate acts of kindness in her community, and finds herself falling in love along the way.

“As a theatre maker, staging Amélie as a musical is one of those exciting, terrifying challenges, that you absolutely cannot turn down,” said Fentiman. “It is a gentle, magical and uncynically joyous piece that takes its audience on a surreal flight of fancy, into the mind of an extraordinary young woman.”

Amélie the Musical will tour the UK from April 11 - August 31 2019, with more dates set to be announced. For more information, visit ameliethemusical.com
