What’s new: Member companies of the American Chamber of Commerce in China (AmCham China) made donations totaling 122 million yuan ($18.8 million) to support China’s flood-hit Henan province, the nongovernmental organization representing U.S. businesses said Thursday.
Companies including 3M, Caterpillar, Coca-Cola, Google and Walmart donated cash, water, food, clothing, equipment and other things to Henan, the Central China province that experienced catastrophic floods over the past few weeks, AmCham China said in a statement.
“Our member companies and their employees very much consider themselves an integral part of Chinese society, and we are proud of their contributions,” said Greg Gilligan, AmCham China chairman. “We continue to encourage our members to show their support.”
The context: Heavy rainfall struck Henan, one of China’s most populous provinces, around July 20, bursting the banks of major rivers and flooding streets in several cities. The death toll from the floods rose to 99 as of Thursday, according to official data.
In Zhengzhou, the provincial capital worst hit by the floods, a record-breaking downpour July 20 flooded the subway system and road tunnels, killing more than 70.
