Ambulances called to reports of children in burning Leeds mill fire

Emergency services rushed to a huge fire at a building in Wortley after reports children were seen playing inside.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (WYF&RS) were called to Blue Hill Lane to reports of a fire at an abandoned property at around 2.58pm.

Four fire engines from three different stations went to the scene as well as police from West Yorkshire Police and several ambulances and paramedics from Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

The street outside the derelict mill was packed with ambulances, fire engines and police after reports of children inside the burning building.

The entire first floor of the building was found ablaze and two large hose jets were used to tackle the fire.

Fortunately no one was found to be injured during the fire, a spokesman for the fire service said.

A statement from the fire service said: “Reports of derelict mill on fire, control added an aerial to the initial attendance.

“This was the made up to 4 pumps and persons reported as children had been seen playing in the mill. 3 storey mill, 100% of 1st floor involved in fire, 2 large jets in use, 1 hose reel and 4 breathing apparatus used.

“No persons injured or involved.

“Appliances from Stanningley, Leeds and Hunslet attended.”
