Ambulance crews in Edinburgh require a police escort when visiting patients over 50 postcodes across the city.
Staff have been left fearing for their safety when treating patients in some parts of the capital.
An investigation from Edinburgh Live has uncovered a large list of areas where police presence is required for ambulance workers to safely carry out their duties.
There are over 50 different postcodes on record, stretching from areas such as Muirhouse, Fountainbridge and Leith to locations in Stockbridge and the New Town.
According to the Scottish Ambulance Service, each postcode contains an address at which a police presence has been required or potentially required when a paramedic crew has attended.
Most frequent on the list was the EH3, EH4, EH6, EH7 and EH8 area codes, however almost every area was mentioned as having a police presence on file.
To ensure staff safety, each incident of threatening or violent behaviour is logged and flagged to crews visiting the same address in the future to allow for support and back up from the police if needed.

Speaking about the figures, the ambulance service said they have introduced a range of training and safety measures to ensure their staff are protected, adding:
"Our staff should not have to fear for their safety when treating patients and keeping them safe is of paramount importance to us.
"Ambulance staff are also trained in managing aggression and assessing risk, enabling them to better judge when they need to wait for support from the Police, or additional ambulance crews."
