Ambulance worker trains dog to teach CPR to raise awareness of emergency first aid

Kaylee Garrick, an ambulance technician based in Shetland, has taught her dog to perform CPR and potentially save people's lives.

The adorable dog Fenton (no, not that Fenton) rose to fame in a new video that shows how easy it is to do CPR if someone were to suffer cardiac arrest.

In the video, which you can view here, Garrick's perfect pooch uses a computer to answer an emergency call before putting on her superhero cape and performing CPR.

Made in a silent movie style, Kaylee is out and about with her friend - a first aid dummy, when all of a sudden the dummy collapses.

Fenton then puts her front paws on top of the dummy and repeatedly presses its chest.

Kaylee, from Scalloway in Shetland, owns SIX sheepdogs AND an Alaskan Klee Kai. She's living her best life.

"Fenton is seven and is the oldest and the cleverest of my dogs. I can rely on her for anything. She is one in a million."

Kaylee came up with the idea because she was concerned that not enough people know how to carry out basic first-aid and life-saving procedures.

She said: "It took a long while to teach Fen how to get on and off the dummy. It's got a mechanical ram fitted in the middle of it and I rigged it up myself."

"I taught Fen to 'get on the chest' while I work a switch that moves the chest up and down, like she's doing CPR."

She added: "It scares me how many shouts I've attended where no form of basic life support has taken place prior to our arrival."

"I created a silly video to introduce people to CPR and used Fenton not only to grab the public’s attention but also to help ease them into what can be a difficult subject to talk about.”

It is clear from this that Fenton is a very good girl and deserves lots of treats.
