Ambulance worker praises youths for 'saving man' from West Belfast bridge

An ambulance worker has praised a group of young people for "saving a man's life" on a West Belfast bridge.

The emergency service worker said they were going home following their shift on Saturday, when they were alerted to a man that was on the floor close to the bridge at the bottom of Broadway.

When he arrived, he found a group of kids in their early teens with a man who appeared to be in distress and they were waiting for an ambulance.

He said that the man had been sitting and dangling his feet over the edge of the bridge, when the group spotted him and quickly went to check on him.

One of the girls in the group then grabbed the man from behind and pulled him to safety, while a member of the public who had stopped their car nearby rang an ambulance for him.

He said: "I was going home from work and was crossing the bridge at the bottom of Broadway by the Balls on the Falls, when I got a call from a colleague to say that a man was on the ground in distress.

"When I got over I found a group of young people, one boy and around four girls, with the man, who looked to be in their early teens and they were sitting with him while an ambulance arrived.

"From talking to them I learned they had seen him sitting on the edge of the bridge, dangling his feet over it. They didn't want to see anyone come to harm, and one of the girls was able to get behind him, grab and pull him to safety.

"I just thought that it was excellent what these young people have done, potentially saving someone's life.

"What they did was incredible and their parents should be very proud of them all."
