Ambulance worker on first day of job helps deliver baby girl at petrol station in Naas

An ambulance worker had a first day on the job he will never forget when he helped to deliver an adorable baby girl outside a petrol station in Kildare.

Little Ellie Feane's parents John Feane and Naomi Galvin were driving home from a check-up in the Coombe Hospital yesterday evening when they got a flat tyre.

John quickly managed to get the tyre changed and was about to set off for home when Naomi realised that Ellie was about to make her entrance.

After alerting emergency services, John pulled into the nearest service station to make it easier for the ambulance to find them.

"It was go time by then, so we made the decision that we were going to have Ellie in the front of my car in Applegreen in Caragh!" he told RTE.

"It was just a worst case scenario, it was spilling rain, it was freezing cold, myself and the paramedic got drowned.

"We were trying to keep Naomi as comfortable as we could until the cavalry arrived and thankfully they did."

A National Ambulance Service crew from Edenderry raced to the scene and helped to safely deliver Ellie before making sure she was fit and healthy before taking mum and baby back to the Coombe.

They later revealed that one of the heroes who helped bring Ellie into the world was in his first day on the job.

They tweeted: "This is Baby Ellie! "Huge congratulations Mum & Dad! Chief Ambulance Officer @RQuinlan999 & @JanetteOman had the privilege of assisting Mum yesterday evening. #Edenderry Ambulance Crew (1 on his 1st day in the job) then transported all safely to the @CoombeHospital."

"Delivery in the front of the car, delivery went fine thanks to mum in fairness, she worked very hard," said Chief Ambulance Officer Richard Quinn.

"We checked little baby Ellie over and once baby is delivered we work making sure baby is okay, mum is okay."

Naomi is expecting to leave the Coombe tomorrow and will bring Ellie home to meet her sister and three brothers.
