Ambulance service's message after loss of 'one of our own' to coronavirus

Tributes have flooded in for a paramedic from the North West Ambulance Service who died after contracting coronavirus.

The paramedic, a married parent, whose family have asked not to be named, sadly lost their life on Friday, April 17 in hospital.

The Ambulance Service said it has been overwhelmed with the amount of messages of condolence they have received, since they made the announcement on Friday.

In a statement on Twitter, a spokesperson said: "We are completely overwhelmed by the huge number of messages of condolence, support and appreciation we have received following the sad loss of one of our own.

"Thank you! All we ask is that you continue to follow the government's guidelines and stay at home and stay safe."

Hundreds of tributes to the paramedic were also shared on the ECHO's Facebook Page this weekend.

Maureen Mainwaring said: "My condolences to the North West Paramedic Services on the loss of your colleague.

"I know how hard you work and the devotion you carry always."

Kathleen Barton said: "Respect for our paramedics.

"They work so hard with no funding. Well done to the NHS, RIP."

Helena Daniels also said: "Oh that's terrible, they are amazing people risking their lives for others."

While Kizzie 'kizzmo' Lyons said: "Much love to the family, friends and colleagues of another fallen hero. xx"

In a statement on Saturday, the North West Ambulance Service said: "It is with great sadness that we share the news that North West Ambulance Service has lost a very dear colleague who contracted Covid-19.

"The paramedic, whose family has asked not to be named, sadly passed away yesterday (Friday 17 April) in hospital.

"Our colleague was married with children and had worked for the trust for a considerable number of years."

It added: "On behalf of everyone here at NWAS, including our patients and the communities we serve, I would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family.

"We would also like to thank our NHS colleagues for their professionalism and the compassionate care they have shown for our friend.

"This will deeply affect many people within the trust and we are supporting our staff during this very sad time.

"We will not be making any further announcements. This statement is the only information that we will be sharing."
