Ambulance held up in Bristol taxi protest which causes city centre gridlock

An ambulance with sirens blaring was held up in an on-going taxi protest this morning.

The Bristol Blue Licensed Taxi Association and Bristol Hackney drivers are staging a slow-moving blockade protest between 7.30am and 10am today (September 1), starting in Brunswick Square and ending at the Hippodrome.

Cab drivers have been angered by Bristol City Council's decision to close the taxi rank outside the Hippodrome.

Already traffic around the Bearpit has been severely held up including an emergency vehicle and public transport.

A video shows an ambulance struggling to get through the stop start traffic around the Bearpit.

After repeated sounding of the siren cars and the taxis pull out of the way to let the emergency vehicle through.

Reportedly 40 taxis are taking part in the protest against the councils decision to close the Hippodrome rank which they say accounts for two thirds of all hackney carriage work in the city.
