Ambulance flips into ditch on busy M3 following crash with lorry

An ambulance has flipped onto its side in a crash on the M3 motorway as drivers are warned to avoid the area.

The accident took place on the northbound carriageway between junctions 8 and 9 in Hampshire.

Both drivers have been treated for minor injuries, although it is not known if the ambulance was carrying a passenger at the time of the crash.

Two fire engines from Hants Fire and Rescue were at the scene, after receiving an emergency call at 11.16am.

A spokeswoman said the lorry had hit the central reservation and the ambulance had flipped on its side off the carriageway.

She added that as no-one was trapped the fire crews helped to make the scene safe.

Police have confirmed the ambulance was not on its way to a 999 call at the time of the crash.

Officers say the road has now been reopened but long delays on surrounding routes are being reported.

South Central Ambulance Service tweeted to say the lorry driver and a member of the ambulance fleet maintenance team have been taken to hospital for further assessment and treatment.
