Ambulance carrying patients involved in three vehicle crash

An ambulance taking two patients to hospital, a bus and a van were involved in a crash which closed a major road in Liverpool today.

The smash happened on the A57 Kensington at the junction of Farnworth Street around 11.30am.

Police and ambulance officials confirmed a private ambulance taking two patients to the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital at Broadgreen was involved in the crash.

An Arriva bus and Citroen Berlingo van were also involved in the accident which closed the road for more than an hour.

Pictures from the scene show the crumpled front end of the Berlingo and mangled front and side of the ambulance.

Fortunately nobody was injured as a result of the crash but North West Ambulance Service came to the rescue of the two patients on board the private ambulance and ensured they got to the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital safely.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We were called at 11.30am to the A57 Kensington at the junction with Farnworth Street. A bus, Citroen Berlingo and private ambulance were involved. There are no reports of injuries as a result of the accident."

He added: "An ambulance took the patients on board the ambulance involved to its intended destination, the Heart and Chest in Broadgreen."

North West Ambulance Service confirmed it sent an ambulance and rapid response vehicle to the scene but there were no reports of injuries.

A spokeswoman said: "Our ambulance took two patients on board the private ambulance and allowed them to continue their journey to the heart and chest hospital."
