Ambulance bursts into flames on the Coast Road as it races to emergency in shocking video

An ambulance has burst into flames on the Coast Road.

Traffic has been delayed on the busy route heading westbound towards Newcastle city centre .

It happened close to the junction with Chillingham Road, near the Corner House pub.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and Northumbria Police were both called out.

No one was injured in incident.

According to eye witness Chris Auld the "ambulance was on its way to an emergency and caught fire on the Coast Road, both paramedics got out unhurt before the fire took hold".

A spokesperson from the North East Ambulance Service said: "One of our vehicles had a fire under the bonnet on the Coast Road.

"We can reassure the public that no patient was on board and the paramedics were uninjured.

"The ambulance was responding to an emergency but another vehicle was reallocated and sent in its place.

"A full assessment of the vehicle will take place."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 2.49pm today (Tuesday), police received a report of an ambulance on fire on the westbound carriageway of the A1058 Coast Road, Newcastle.

"Emergency services are in attendance. Nobody has been injured.

"Drivers are advised that there may be increased congestion in the area as the clean-up operation continues."

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Service spokesperson confirmed they were dealing with the incident but said no one had been injured.
