Ambitious planning application submitted for alpaca trekking experience in Ballynahinch

Plans have been submitted for an ambitious new alpaca trekking experience near the Mourne Mountains.

Ballyburren Outside Escapes has lodged the application for a 1.3km walking experience with the Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council.

The site, which already exists in Ballynahinch, proposes plans to open to the public with "pre-purchases bookings to trek with alpacas".

The applications says there will be an associated small car park with ten parking spaces for visitors, including two spaces for disabled users.

A small horse style coffee dock will also be installed on the premises if planning is approved.

The mature land, on the Dromore Road, extends to around 18 acres with a mix of waterways, woodland and gardens.

Documents submitted to the Council said the proposal would be "viable business" for the local area.

They added: "We are on the eastern fringes of the Lisburn and Castlereagh Council closest to the Mourne Mountains.

"This is an advantageous location for tourism and just a five minute detour from the A24 to Newcastle. We sit just 35 minutes from Belfast International [Airport] and 25 minutes from Belfast city centre."

The applicant says they currently own a small herd of alpacas for "grazing and fleecing production".

The closest business similar to the proposal is based nearly an hour away in Kilkeel, according to the application.

You can see the plans for yourself on the planning application section of their website by entering LA05/2020/1049/F.
