Ambitious Ayrshire beach park plans revealed as council apply for regeneration cash

A new £270,000 community centre could be built at Stevenston Beach Park if North Ayrshire Council wins government funding.

The seaside hub would have a cafe and toilets.

Its aims would include boosting knowledge about wildlife, acting as a foodbank and offering services for tourists and the community.

Council bosses also want to get government cash to carry out a £2 million restoration of Millport Town Hall.

The at risk building would become a heritage, arts and community centre with three holiday let flats.

Another proposal would see the Geilsland Courtyard Hall in Beith get a £750,000 renovation.

The council have applied to the Scottish Government Regeneration Capital Grant Fund to make the three projects happen.

Bosses made bids to get £1.5 million grant  funding for the Millport Hall work, £130,000 for the Stevenston beach project and £700,00 towards the Beith building makeover.

Additional money for the proposals would come from the North Ayrshire Council Community Investment Fund.

Councillors were presented with the plans at a most recent cabinet meeting.

A paper on the funding bids said: “A number of potential projects have been considered for submission, and applications have been submitted for three projects which are considered best placed to benefit from the funding.”

Councillors unanimously approved the retrospective funding applications.

The cash is available for regeneration work to bring improvements to deprived areas.

The council will find out if it has been successful with the stage 1 Scottish Government Regeneration Capital Grant Fund application in September. If so more details on the bids must be submitted to Holyrood before the final decision is announced in January.
