'Ambitious' £1.9m scheme to rejuvenate Maybole High Street could see one-way traffic system and new market square

A one-way traffic system, new market square and wider pavements to prioritise pedestrians and business use could be the fresh look for Maybole High Street.

Plans to rejuvenate the town will see £1.9 million spent on transforming the area which will “completely change the visitor experience” and make the it a “destination of choice”.

The proposals include an Active Travel scheme which aims to encourage locals and visitors to walk, wheel and cycle once the high street is no longer dominated by traffic.

Residents are invited to have their say on the proposals – submissions to be in by 5pm on Friday, July 23 – with a new 3D fly-through created to help residents visualise the new look.

The South Ayrshire Council scheme, in partnership with the town's community council, forms part of the ambitious Maybole Regeneration Project which will see up to £8m ploughed into the area over the next three years.

The plans to revamp the high street link with other projects, such as investing in the town’s historic buildings and the new community campus.

Councillor Chris Cullen, South Ayrshire's economy and culture portfolio holder, said: “We understand the role and importance of our town centres and we are committed to investing in them to help drive recovery.

“The proposals for Maybole will completely change the visitor experience, increasing accessibility and enhancing community connectivity for all, via the active travel network, making it a destination of choice.

“It will also enhance the area for local businesses and the community of North Carrick.”

Maybole Community Council chair Mark Fletcher added: “There is no doubt that these are ambitious plans for the town centre.

“The animated fly-through brings everything to life and we are really keen to hear from the community and businesses on these proposals.”

Head of infrastructure delivery for Sustrans Scotland, Chiquita Elvin, said: “These draft proposals seek to address the challenges posed by Maybole’s historic town centre and demonstrate how partnerships make better places to walk, cycle, live, visit and work and how this can be done while respecting the historic character and heritage of a place.”
