Amber weather warning as Scotland set to be battered with eight inches of snow today

Scotland could be battered with up to eight inches of snow over a seven hour period today as weather forecasters issue an amber weather warning for blizzard conditions.

The Met Office is expecting around 10cm of ‘frequent and heavy’ snowfall between 2pm and 9pm on Tuesday.

Travel chaos is expected on both the roads and public transport, while some rural communities could be struck by power cuts.

An amber warning for snow has been put in place for much of the south of Scotland, where towns such as Biggar, Peebles and Lanark bearing the brunt of severe weather conditions.

A yellow weather warning for wind and snow is still in place for the majority of Scotland for Tuesday.

Weather experts anticipate around eight inches of snow to accumulate some higher parts of the country from yesterday (Monday) to 11.59pm on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Snow showers will become frequent and heavy at times through Tuesday afternoon and evening giving accumulations of 10 cm of snow within a few hours, particularly above 150 metres.

“Strong winds, gusting over 50 mph at times, will lead to blizzard conditions and considerable drifting of lying snow over high ground."

The snow has already been causing chaos on the roads all across Scotland as drivers battle the wintry conditions.

Police moved to a nine-mile stretch of the M74 at Uddington after a lorry overturned during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
