Holidaymakers have been advised to delay booking summer trips until a further 22 countries have been added to the 'green list,' it has been suggested.
Countries and territories, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca, Majorca and Formentera, were moved to the quarantine-free green list.
But a number of popular hotspots such as France, Greece, Italy and mainland Spain remain in the amber tier, the LiverpoolEcho reports.
Passengers returning to the UK from those locations must self-isolate at home for 10 days, making holidays unviable for many people.
However, former British Airways strategy chief Robert Boyle, indicated 22 more countries now meet the threshold to be included on the green list.
He told the Telegraph that all of the destinations had infection rates lower than 20 cases per 100,000 of the population and with fewer than 1.5 per cent of all tests taken returning a positive Covid result.
All of the 22 countries listed currently have amber status, reports LancsLive.
Mr Boyle said: “There seems to be nothing in the data the Government says it is using that explains why they are languishing on the amber list at this point.
“I’m sure the answer is politics somehow, but there doesn’t even seem to be any obvious political logic for why two apparently similar countries get classified differently.”
Countries that may be eligible for the green list:
- France
- Italy
- Austria
- Bulgaria
- Hungary
- Romania
- Poland
- Norway
- Vietnam
- Denmark
- Slovakia
- North Macedonia
- Czech Republic
- Estonia
- Finland
- Lebanon
- Liechtenstein
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Moldova
- Taiwan
- Azerbaijan
The next review is expected to take place on July 15 and any changes are then likely to be introduced by July 26.
