Amber list holidays cost less than many staycation breaks - even with PCR tests - says study

A trip abroad can still be better value than holidaying in the UK, according to latest analysis.

Research from travel specialist Holiday Extras, has highlighted how much cheaper it is to head to an amber-list destination than to a holiday hotspot in Britain.

With holidays permitted to amber-list destinations, the report analysed three of the main holiday booking websites’ ( Expedia, Lastminute.com, and Booking.com ) cheapest flight and accommodation options to Crete, Malta, and Tenerife – and compared them to a sample of popular seaside towns in the UK: Newquay, Whitby, Whitstable, and Morecambe.

Even with the price of Covid tests and domestic travel included, the report found that it is much cheaper to head to Europe this summer – with some seaside locations in the UK more than double the price than a week in the sun.

On average, Malta was the cheapest of the three amber list destinations analysed, coming in at just over a third of the price of a week in Newquay. Whitstable was the second most expensive UK destination, costing over 25 per cent more than week-long trips to Crete or Tenerife.

Full analysis, based on two adults sharing accommodation for one week.

Seamus McCauley, of Holiday Extras, said: “Don't get us wrong, a UK break can be a great holiday, and there aren’t many things better than lazy days on a beach in Cornwall or a walking holiday in the Welsh mountains.

"But with UK hotels, beaches, pubs and attractions filling up, and amber list trips perfectly legal, it's worth at least considering whether a quiet beach in the Canaries or a sleepy taverna on a Greek island could actually be your cheapest and easiest option for your summer holiday."
