Amber Gill sheds light on reality of social media which left her in 'dark place'

Amber Gill has opened up on how social media can be a "dark place" as she shared her mental health struggles.

The reality star, 23, instantly shot to overnight fame after she appeared on ITV2's Love Island last year and won the show.

Despite her success, Amber has revealed she "doesn't always" feel happy and bubbly when she tunes into social media to update her followers.

The Geordie babe said she sometimes "puts on a front" and "pretends to be happy" on social media for the sake of her 2.7million fans.

She told OK! magazine: "During lockdown I kind of wanted to be positive for other people when really I was feeling stressed, but I was probably doing that for other people's sake to boost morale. That's kind of what I like to do on Instagram.

"Subconsciously, I'm posting something and pretending to be happy when I'm not really happy myself, so yeah I've definitely done that a couple of times."

Amber has revealed she tries to keep it real on Instagram as her followers believe she is "authentic" and they trust her word.

She added: "So I think it's really important to be honest with them because even I judge people's lives from Instagram so I can’t imagine how they feel seeing me living my best life."

The starlet also revealed mental health is important to her "because it affects your every day life, how you feel and how you act and react to things".

She also said it's "important for everyone to feel comfortable" with talking about mental health issues.

Amber is a huge social media sensation and attracted a whole legion of fans after winning the show with ex-boyfriend Greg O'Shea, who went on to break her heart.

Thankfully, her fans supported her through the break-up and now Amber is living care-free and loving life.
