Amber Alert cancelled as Gold Coast police take man into custody

Queensland Police have taken a man into custody on the Gold Coast after he claimed to be carrying a child in a gym bag, but police say no child was actually involved.

Police issued an Amber Alert and combed streets in Labrador and Southport after the man entered a petrol station on Frank Street in Labrador at 10:30am and told the attendant he had a child in the bag he was carrying.

The alert has now been cancelled.

The ABC understands the man was arrested in Southport about 2:00pm and driven to the local police station where he was being questioned by detectives.

Police used electronic billboards to raise awareness of the Amber Alert.
