Amazonia at M&D's donate vital PPE to NHS, while going above and beyond to care for animals

An indoor rainforest has donated PPE equipment to local hospitals.

Amazonia Rainforest at M&D’s in Motherwell donated 90 pairs of safety goggles to University Hospital Wishaw to help during the COVID-19 pandemic.

These goggles are usually for guests at Amazonia who will be taking part in animal handling sessions.

Amanda Gott, manager of Amazonia, said: “As we have had to close to the public for now, we had these brand new goggles in our store room and wondered if they might be of use to the staff at University Hospital Wishaw.

“The goggles are used when customers handle the tarantulas as they can sometimes flick hairs off their bodies when they feel nervous which can cause irritation to the handler’s skin and eyes.”

And Amanda, who has been the manager at Amazonia for eight years, has been going above and beyond to care for the animals in the rainforest.

She said: ““I am staying on site at Amazonia just now to ensure that the animals are looked after and have all they need.

“This isn’t a job for me, it’s a way of life so I want to ensure that the animals don’t suffer any additional distress or disruption due to the current situation.”
