May 25--E-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc. will open two new warehouses in California, bringing to nine the number of shipping facilities the company operates in the state.
The sprawling warehouses -- which Amazon calls "fulfillment centers" -- will open in Eastvale in the Inland Empire and Tracy in the Bay Area.
Both facilities will be about 1 million square feet and will employ more than 1,500 workers together, Amazon said. Both are on the outskirts of major metropolitan areas, a strategy that analysts have said could help the company more quickly deliver products to its city-dwelling customers.
Amazon did not specify when these facilities would open.
The Eastvale facility is designated for packing and shipping smaller items, such as books and electronics, while the Tracy warehouse, which is the city's second Amazon center, will focus on larger items like big-screen televisions and patio furniture.
Amazon's other California warehouses are located in Patterson, Moreno Valley, Redlands, Rialto and San Bernardino, where it has two facilities. Analysts estimate the company has about 120 warehouses worldwide, about 100 of them in the U.S.
