Amazon warehouse workers confirm more strikes will take place

Amazon workers have announced a series of strikes at one of the company's warehouses in a dispute over pay.

The GMB said more than 350 staff at the fulfilment centre in Coventry will walk out on February 28, March 2 and from March 13 to 17. The union said its members made history last month by becoming the first Amazon workers in the UK to strike in their campaign for a pay rate of £15 an hour.

Amanda Gearing, GMB senior organiser, said the "unprecedented" strikes showed the anger among Amazon workers in Coventry.

She said: "They work for one of the richest companies in the world, yet they have to work round the clock to keep themselves afloat. It's sickening that Amazon workers in Coventry will earn just 8p above the national minimum wage in April 2023.

"Amazon bosses can stop this industrial action by doing the right thing and negotiating a proper pay rise with workers."

Staff want their minimum wage of around £10.50 a hour to be raised to £15. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is worth £97billion.

An Amazon spokesperson said: "A tiny proportion of our workforce is involved. In fact, according to the verified figures, only a fraction of 1% of our UK employees voted in the ballot - and that includes those who voted against industrial action.

"We appreciate the great work our teams do throughout the year and we're proud to offer competitive pay which starts at a minimum of between £10.50 and £11.45 per hour, depending on location. This represents a 29% increase in the minimum hourly wage paid to Amazon employees since 2018.

"Employees are also offered comprehensive benefits that are worth thousands more - including private medical insurance, life assurance, subsidised meals and an employee discount, to name a few."
