Amazon to create 150 new jobs with move into warehouse in Rochdale

Internet shopping giant Amazon is moving into a huge new warehouse in Rochdale.

Amazon Logistics will take over the enormous 20,000 square metre (215,278 sq. ft) warehouse on Kingsway Business Park, in Milnrow, with a new ‘delivery station’.

The company’s move into the borough will create 50 permanent jobs alongside more than one hundred driver opportunities through Amazon’s delivery partners.

It’s expected that Amazon will be settled in by autumn.

It means that the company will serve shoppers in the Rochdale area from the Milnrow base in order to ‘help speed up deliveries for customers’, as the delivery station will ‘power the last mile of our order process’, an official statement from the business said.

Typically, packages are shipped to a delivery station from neighbouring Amazon fulfilment and sorting centres, loaded into delivery vehicles and delivered to customers, the firm added.

The news has been welcomed by Labour MP for Rochdale, Tony Lloyd.

“Rochdale needs jobs, so it is good to see this announcement by Amazon that they are creating these permanent jobs for the town,” he said.

“This is a strong signal that Rochdale is a great place to locate. The example that Amazon is setting will be followed by many other businesses.”

Representatives from Amazon said they were ‘excited’ to ‘invest’ in the town.

Kerry-Anne Lawlor, Country Director for Amazon Logistics, added: “We are excited to invest in the Rochdale area with a new delivery station that will provide efficient delivery for customers, and create new jobs for the talented workforce.”

Additionally, Amazon is offering entrepreneurs the opportunity to build their own business delivering Amazon packages, as well as independent contractors the flexibility to be their own boss and create their own schedule delivering for Amazon Flex.
