Amazon to build distribution center in Pullman, bringing 100s of jobs: alderman

Amazon is planning to build a huge 40-acre distribution center in the Pullman neighborhood, Ald. Anthony Beale (9th) confirmed Monday morning.

“This is absolutely huge for the city of Chicago and for the South Side. It means hundreds more jobs at one of the fastest-growing companies in the world,” Beale said.

The facility would be built on the site of the former Ryerson Steel property and bring hundreds of construction jobs along with hundreds more in permanent jobs.

“And we did it without the mayor’s help,” said Beale, who was stripped of his committee chairmanship for opposing Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s choice of Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd) as Finance Committee chairman.

Beale confirmed the move by the giant retailer, which was first reported by Crain’s Chicago Business.

But later Monday, Lightfoot, appearing at an unrelated event, said “I don’t think there is anything to talk about yet. We haven’t heard anything from Amazon. So I think Alderman Beale got a little ahead of himself.”

More details to come.
