Amazon staff offered chance to set up delivery businesses

Amazon is giving its workers the chance to set up their own business delivering goods for the online giant.

The company is offering to cover the start-up costs for UK employees who want to build up their own delivery company.

Amazon uses dozens of small, local and regional delivery firms, saying customer demand is continuing to grow.

Office workers and those in Amazon's fulfilment centres will be offered the opportunity to set up a delivery business, including a business grant covering three months of an employee's salary.

Doug Gurr, Amazon's "UK country leader", said: "We have long innovated on unique programmes and services that empower employees to pursue their career aspirations, and we've had a great response to programmes such as Career Choice that enable employees to take that next step in the career of their choice.

"We are excited to launch an initiative to help make the dreams of employees who have always wanted to run their own business come true.

"Customer demand is higher than ever and we have a need to build more delivery capacity. We believe Amazonians that have a history of thinking big and delivering results will build engaged teams to provide a great delivery experience for customers."

Amazon said people could earn between £50,000 and £150,000 in annual profits operating a fleet of 20 to 40 delivery vehicles.
