Amazon shopper gobsmacked by eye-watering delivery cost for £4.99 Christmas gift

Everyone knows that Christmas can be an expensive time of year - even if you try and opt for cheaper presents.

That said, you probably won't be shocked to find websites charging a little bit extra for next day delivery - especially if it means being able to get everything done from the comfort of your own home.

While a couple of extra quid seems reasonable, what you don't expect is for next day delivery to cost TENS OF THOUSANDS of pounds.

Yep, you heard that right. 24-year-old Danielle Long from Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, was stunned when Amazon wanted her to pay  £9,999 for next-day delivery, reports the Mirror .

The standard delivery charge on the Nifogo Bedside Pocket - a holder for phones and tablets which clips on your bed - was just £2.99. However, that would not arrive until January 11 at the earliest.

Amazon offered her next day delivery but that was £9,999 - which was £9,996.01 more expensive.

But that was still a risk because it would arrive between Christmas Eve and December 27.

It did offer a slightly cheaper delivery of £8,888 for it to be guaranteed by Friday.

Kids' soft play worker Danielle, of Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, posted the hiked charges on Facebook .

She quipped: "That's a tough one.

"I wish it was a joke, really wanted it before Christmas."

She later added: "I was shocked, but I found it funny.

"But I think it's from a secondary seller through Amazon."

Commenting on the Facebook post, Amy Warner said: "Surely not?"

Pal Abygail Grundie asked: "Did you get it sorted?"

"I don't know why the postage was so high.

Danielle replied: "Yeah I paid £2.99 and I'll wait until January."

An Amazon spokesman said: "All Marketplace sellers must follow our selling guidelines, and instances of potential non-compliance will be investigated, with sellers subject to action including potential removal of their account."
