Amazon set to open first checkout-free grocery store in the UK in coming days

Online behemoth Amazon is preparing to open its first walk-in store in the UK this week, selling items such as groceries and technology, without any checkouts.

The multi-billion-pound retail empire - owned by the richest man in the world - is bringing its Amazon Go concept to Britain's high streets, allowing shoppers to pick up items without tills and minimal staff.

The first shop will open 'this week' in Ealing in West London, according to reports.

And as with its US stores, there will be no physical checkouts, with all shopping baskets scanned - and customers charged - when they leave the store via the Amazon Go app.

The concept first launched in the US in 2018 and it was first reported last year that the shopping giant was eyeing as many as 30 locations in the UK for bricks and mortar stores.

According to speculation, staff are preparing to open the shop in the coming days - with coverings hiding the Amazon branded store front on the busy West London high street.

The shops use "Just Walk Out" technology which means customers can avoid queueing.

Shoppers must scan their unique Amazon bar code on their phone to enter the store, allowing sensor technology and cameras to monitor the products they walk out with.

The contactless service will work using the same type of technology found in self-driving cars which can detect when products are taken or returned to the shelves, while monitoring your virtual cart.

When you leave the store with your goods, your Amazon account will be charged and a receipt sent to your address (Co-op)

Shoppers are only billed for their shopping once they leave the store using the credit card associated with their Amazon account.

There are no checkout workers but employees will be on the shop floor to assist customers and replenish stock.

In the US the online giant has around 25 Amazon Go stores in Seattle, Chicago, New York City and San Francisco.

More locations are said to be on the cards, with Amazon reportedly targeting transport hubs, so it can attract busy commuters who need to pick up items on the go.
