Amazon Prime members are being warned about a scam that could costs thousands

Amazon is warning its Prime members about a new scam that is doing the rounds.

Some customers have received phone calls with a recorded message saying their Prime membership is being automatically renewed.

This means £39 would be debited from their account, but some people who have picked up these calls don't have a Prime account.

The call reportedly asks you to "press option one" if you do not wish to renew, and then you are put through to a scammer posing as a customer service operator, EssexLive reports.

One elderly lady reportedly lost £25,000 after she received one of these calls and was told that her account must have been fraudulently set up and that the operator would need access to her computer to improve the security settings.

What to do if you think the Amazon Prime call to renew is a scam

Amazon have now warned customers to never to take action on their accounts in response to an unsolicited call.

They said: "We take phishing and spoofing attempts seriously, and will never call a customer for payment outside of our website.

"If a customer has concerns or receives a call they believe is not from Amazon, they should check the Amazon website's help pages for guidance."
