Amazon Logistics is opening a huge new delivery hub in south Leicestershire this summer, which it said would lead to more than 50 jobs.
The delivery side of the global retail giant said it was planning to open a 409,000 sq ft delivery station at the big Magna Park warehouse park off the A5 at Lutterworth, serving customers based in that part of the country.
It said some 50 people will be based in permanent roles there, and there would be hundreds of driver opportunities for Amazon Logistics and Amazon Flex delivery partners.
A spokesman said: “Delivery stations power the last mile of our order process and help speed up deliveries for customers.
“Packages are shipped to a delivery station from neighbouring Amazon fulfilment and sortation centres, loaded into delivery vehicles and delivered to customers.”
South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa said: "I am delighted to welcome Amazon to South Leicestershire, as one of the world’s largest businesses and employers delivering thousands of items across the UK every day, I am sure they will fit in very well at Magna Park in Lutterworth.
“The new delivery station will create a host of permanent jobs for my constituents and will provide a very welcome economic boost to the local area, and therefore I look forward to visiting the new delivery station once it is open and operational later this year.”
Kerry-Anne Lawlor, country director for Amazon Logistics, said: “We are excited to invest in the Lutterworth area with a new delivery station that will provide efficient delivery for customers, and create new jobs for the talented workforce.”
Amazon said wages start at £10 an hour and employees are offered benefits including private medical insurance, life assurance, income protection and an employee discount – which it said combined are worth more than £700 annually – as well as a company pension plan.
