Amazon Fire TV Stick users to get warning over streaming illegal content

A warning has been issued to people who own an Amazon Fire TV Stick as incorrectly using the device could lead to either "damage" or "loss of data".

The handy devices allow users instant access to streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+. It can also be used to download unofficial apps that aren’t up on Amazon’s store, some of which can be used for illegal streaming.

However, AFTnews have spotted what appears to be an attempt to crack down on these dodgy sites, Express reports. AFTnews posted a screenshot showing a warning message that shows up when a user attempts to download an unofficial app.

The message reads: "WARNING: When you use applications from unknown sources, your TV and personal data are less secure and there is a risk of unexpected behaviour.

"You agree that you are solely responsible for any damage to your device or loss of data that may result from using these applications."

Despite this warning, it doesn’t appear that amazon is stopping access to unofficial apps, but people have still been urged to not as downloading the app could open the door to more data-stealing malware.

As well as this using dodge sites could lead to adult content appearing on TVs which younger members of the household could accidentally watch.

This comes after research, that analysed 50 popular illegal streaming sites, found all of them contained malicious content, with a further 40% not having a security certificate which means they probably aren't safe to visit.
