Amazon Echo: How to stop your children ordering Christmas fart extensions through Alexa

Alexa can be a great friend to your young children - but like all friends, she can sometimes lead them astray and encourage bad behaviour.

And if the settings aren't right on your Amazon Echo, it can prove a little bit costly - especially for children who find farting noises hilarious.

BristolLive journalist Phil Norris found his account had been debited by £1.99 for a Christmas Farts Extension Pack by his young children.

Despite hearing a wide-range of simulated farting noises from his daughters' bedroom, he assumed it was just part of the comprehensive service offered by the virtual assistant in the same way she tells jokes, reads the news, or plays music.

You can hear a sample of Alexa's farting skills in the video at the top of this article.

Luckily, it is simple to protect yourself from more unwanted purchases of childish things, as Amazon explains:

How to turn off Amazon Echo voice purchasing

To ensure it won't just order anything from a voice prompt, follow these simple steps:

  • Open the Alexa app.
  • Hit the More button to open up the menu choices.
  • Head into Settings, Account settings, then Voice Purchasing.
  • Turn off voice purchasing OR you can set a voice code.

It's simple to do and while your children may not be happy, your bank account should remain untouched by your over-excited little ones.
