Amazon delivery driver may have saved woman's life when he smelled gas

An Amazon delivery driver potentially saved a woman's life after smelling gas while he was dropping off a parcel. Driver Gary Welshman was dropping a parcel at an address in Peterborough when he smelled gas.

Gary rang the doorbell and knocked on the door several times but had no reply, so left a note saying he had left the parcel - and that he thought there could be a gas leak.

Homeowner Sharon Watson, who had been in the house but on a call, spotted the note and called National Grid - who sent an engineer immediately, and found a leaking gas inlet valve.

Gary said: “I just did what I thought was the right thing to do and I hope that someone else would do the same. It feels good knowing that my actions may have prevented a life-threatening situation.”

Andrej Budkevic, Amazon Senior Delivery Station Manager, added: “I would like to thank Gary for his thoughtful actions. He was brilliant.

"The whole team here at the Amazon delivery station in Peterborough are extremely touched by this story, which showcased an inspiring level of customer care. We have very high standards for the delivery service providers we work with and how they serve customers but Gary went a step further, which may well have saved a customer’s life. He is a real credit to the profession.”
