Living on a fixed income can be a challenge for retirees, so it’s important to shop wisely and know where to find the best deals to make the most of your senior discount days. Many retailers make it a little easier to save money by providing perks exclusive to retirees, while others simply offer everyday low prices you don’t want to miss.

Sure, age requirements and discounts vary by location, but finding ways to lower your expenses is priceless in this economy. From free rewards programs that offer discounts to special savings days, you can cut costs by simply knowing when and where to shop (or what promo code to use). Here’s a look at nine retailers that offer special senior fares, discounts and perks that retirees should cash in on.

Amazon

Though technically, Amazon doesn’t offer a senior discount, that doesn’t mean some seniors can’t qualify for a reduced monthly subscription fee. If this sounds like something that would benefit your finances, you could get Prime Access Membership if you receive assistance from the following:

  • Medicaid
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Direct Express Prepaid Debit Card
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • National School Lunch Program (NSLP)
  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
  • Women, Infants and Children Program, or Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC)

If you receive any qualifying government assistance, you may be eligible for a discounted membership. Eligible recipients can get Prime for just $3.50 per month for the first three months, and $6.99 thereafter.

Be Aware: 6 Key Signs You’ll Run Out of Retirement Funds Too Early

Costco

Your Costco membership is almost as good as an AARP membership in your golden years, as it can amount to serious savings in a variety of categories. For example, you can save up to 80% on a wide variety of popular medications at the Costco Pharmacy, and that’s just the beginning.

The store’s Kirkland brand items can also be notably cost-effective. Even though Costco doesn’t offer a specific senior discount on either memberships or in-store purchases, it still offers general discounts on hearing aids, gas and other merchandise that retirees need and it makes a membership worth it.

CVS

CVS Shoppers 60 and older are eligible for a variety of deals and offers just for older adults as part of the free ExtraCare program. You’ll also get birthday rewards, 2% back in ExtraBucks Rewards on purchases and $4 off your first purchase after enrolling. Additionally, CVS offers no-cost vaccines with most Medicare plans.

Fred Meyer

On the first Tuesday of each month, seniors ages 55 and up can take an additional 10% off select items. This special monthly discount can get you cheaper prices on the following:

  • Private brand groceries including Fred Meyer, Kroger, Simple Truth and more
  • Apparel, shoes and accessories
  • Home goods from departments such as toys, sporting goods, auto and garden
  • Select electronics

Kohl’s

Shoppers ages 60 and up receive a 15% discount on qualifying in-store purchases every Wednesday at Kohl’s. Although the discount cannot be combined with other percent-off coupons or promotions, it can be used with dollar-off coupons like Kohl’s Cash, so you can end up saving a bundle as long as you bring a valid ID to validate your age.

Michaels

Register for Michaels Rewards and receive a senior discount of 10% off your entire purchase — including sale items — online and in-store every day. You can even get this senior discount on sale items. You can’t lose as Michaels Rewards accounts are free, and you can easily create one either in store or online.

Target

Target Optical offers exclusive discounts to AARP members. This includes an extra 10% off contact lenses, 50% off additional pairs of prescription eyewear or sunglass purchases and an extra $10 off eyewear.

Additionally, opening a Target Circle card can allow you to save 5% on purchases every day. Choose from a credit card, debit card or reloadable account to receive this benefit and a variety of others.

Walgreens

Those 55 years old and up can join myWalgreens for free and access exclusive senior savings. This includes a Seniors Day discount on the first Tuesday of each month. This is known as “Seniors Day.” You’ll need to show proof of age to receive the discount.

This steal of a deal applies to eligible regular-priced items in-store. You should note that some items like alcohol, tobacco and prescriptions are excluded from the discount. You can also use the code SENIOR20 online to receive 20% off select regular-priced items, according to Walgreens.

Walmart

If you’re an AARP member, you can get $20 off a Walmart+ annual membership. This comes with a variety of benefits, including free delivery from your Walmart store, free shipping with no order minimum, fuel discounts, a complimentary Paramount+ subscription, free returns from home, 25% off every day at Burger King and more.

Alternately, if you’re not an AARP member, but receive Medicaid or other qualifying forms of government assistance, you can get a Walmart+ membership for $6.47 per month or $49 per year.
