The Amazon series “Utopia,” a conspiracy thriller set and shot in Chicago, will not return for a second season, various news outlets report.
An adaptation of a 2013 British series, the eight-part drama was written and co-produced by Chicago author Gillian Flynn (“Gone Girl”) and premiered in September. John Cusack, Sasha Lane and Rainn Wilson starred.
“Utopia” focused on a group of comic book fans convinced that grim events predicted in a dystopic graphic novel were coming true. When they meet the book’s heroine, Jessica Hyde (Sasha Lane), in real life, they join her in trying to save the world while being pursued by an assassin.
John Cusack co-stars as a biotech CEO aided by a disgraced virologist (Rainn Wilson).
Long in the making, “Utopia” first had been in the works for HBO until Flynn’s collaborator David Fincher, director of the “Gone Girl” movie, quit in a budget dispute in 2015.
