Amazon and JCPenney offer customers relief with gas deals for holiday weekend

As millions of Americans prepare to hit the road for the Fourth of July holiday, a pair of major retailers is offering separate promotions to help drivers offset the cost of filling up.

Amazon Prime members who link their Amazon account to the Earnify app can save 50 cents per gallon on one fuel purchase July 2–5 at more than 7,500 participating BP, Amoco, ampm and Thorntons stations. The offer is available only to eligible Prime members and can be redeemed on a single fill-up during the promotional period.

Prime members also get a little-known, year-round perk of 10 cents off per gallon at the participating gas stations.

Meanwhile, JCPenney is taking a different approach this holiday weekend by rewarding shoppers who have already purchased gas. On Friday only, customers who bring a receipt, digital or printed, from any gas station to a J.C. Penney store will receive $10 off a purchase of $10 or more, effectively allowing shoppers to recoup part of their fuel costs while shopping.

Unlike Amazon's offer, the promotion is open to all customers and is not tied to a membership.

“JCPenney has always been there to help families stretch their budgets without asking them to compromise on style, quality or value,” Michelle Wlazlo, Brand CEO of JCPenney, said in a statement. “You’re already heading to the gas pump, so why not use the opportunity to put some money back in your pocket? Fuel Up and Save is a fun way to take an everyday expense and turn it into something rewarding at JCPenney, so you can spend the holiday weekend making memories with the people you love—not worrying about every dollar spent getting there.”

The discounts arrive as drivers are already benefiting from lower prices at the pump. Average gasoline prices declined in 46 states over the past week, helping push the national average down by nearly 7 cents to $3.78 per gallon, the lowest level since March, according to a GasBuddy report released Monday.

The decline is being linked to lower crude oil prices after a U.S.–Iran agreement helped ease tensions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which improved global oil supply and helped push prices down at the pump.
