Amazon acquires Ring, Santa Monica-based maker of smart doorbells

Amazon Inc. has agreed to buy Ring, the Santa Monica, Calif.-based maker of security cameras and internet-connected doorbells, the companies said Tuesday.

The deal is worth more than $1 billion, Reuters reported, citing an unidentified source familiar with the matter.

The acquisition pushes Amazon further into consumers' homes. The Seattle e-commerce giant recently launched a service that allows delivery people to enter customers' homes to drop off packages.

"Ring's home security products and services have delighted customers since Day 1. We're excited to work with this talented team and help them in their mission to keep homes safe and secure," Amazon said in a statement.

Ring makes video doorbells that allows owners to see who's at the door remotely.

"Ring is committed to our mission to reduce crime in neighborhoods by providing effective yet affordable home security tools to our neighbors that make a positive impact on our homes, our communities and the world," the company said in a statement. "We'll be able to achieve even more by partnering with an inventive, customer-centric company like Amazon. We look forward to being a part of the Amazon team as we work toward our vision for safer neighborhoods."
