'Amazing to me' - Jonny Owen reveals Nottingham Forest ambition

Jonny Owen is hoping he can play some small part in bringing the glory days back to Nottingham Forest.

The Welsh actor and filmmaker produced the critically-acclaimed 2015 film I Believe in Miracles, charting the club’s remarkable success under Brian Clough as they went on to win the European Cup in 1979.

Now based in Nottingham with partner Vicky McClure, Owen has been Forest's media and communications director - and board member - since March 2018.

He has just landed his own radio show on talkSPORT, which starts tomorrow (Sunday).

Ahead of the launch, the 48-year-old has been speaking about his adopted home city and football club.

“I grew up supporting Cardiff, being from south Wales, but Vicky is a Nottingham girl and we moved there about seven years ago,” said Owen.

“Nottingham as a city has been amazing to me. I can’t speak highly enough about the place.

"I really hope I can help, in some tiny way, to get Forest back where they once were.”

Reflecting on Forest's unprecedented success under Clough, Owen added: “They won it (the European Cup) twice! It’s just bonkers.

"I think it’s one of the greatest stories in the history of sport.

“Brian Clough was at the height of his powers then. He went into an ordinary, second division team and turned it around.

“Five of the players who played in the European Cup finals were already there when he arrived. So he didn’t go in there like Pep Guardiola and just buy all the players he wanted. He worked with what he had.

“These international stars were all playing in the middle of the second division when Clough arrived.

“The film was a testament to how important one man can be for a football club – a bit like Bill Shankly at Liverpool and Matt Busby at Manchester United. Clough was some fella.”

With the season currently suspended, Forest are fifth in the Championship table - in a play-off spot - with nine games to go.

The Reds could return to training next week ahead of a potential return to action.

Jonny Owen and Friends launches on talkSPORT on Sunday (May 24) from 9am-11am.
